My name is Katrina Solter. I am an Episcopal middler from Concord, NH and have three children ages 11, 7, 18 months. I began this ministry two years ago with Episcopal mothers from the city of Concord, NH where I live. Many women expressed their desire for spirituality in a small-group setting of women, but could not find the time to fit it in with their schedules. I began a group called: "Prayer and Play" a ministry for mothers (or fathers) and their children. Each week they come to my house, we light candles and say prayers of intercession, thanksgiving, or any general petitions. Children also may express prayers of their own. Next, we read the Episcopal Lectionary of the day, sing hymns with guitar accompaniment and instruments from the children, and then we have a general discussion/ reflection on what aspects of the readings relate to our own lives. We have also used art, play dough, and crayon drawings as part of prayer and play. Women have a place to reflect their voices, concerns, passions, and praises for God and Jesus, while children learn to see prayer as part of everyday life, as something that is joyful, and is an integral part of play.
